Throughout history Native peoples have made significant
contributions to society and have been essential to Alberta’s growth and
success. June is the month of the National Aboriginal Awareness. To celebrate
this special month and honour the outstanding achievements made by indigenous
people, Action
for Healthy Communities (AHC), the Aboriginal Education Centre at MacEwan
University, and Full House Events will co-sponsor an “Aboriginal Culture Day Celebration”
on Saturday, June 7, from 2:00 to 5:00
pm at AHC (10554 – 110 Street, Edmonton, Alberta). We cordially
invite you as our distinguished guest to attend our celebration. Attached please find the event poster.
Our celebration includes indigenous keynote speakers, traditional prayer, and entertainment provided by Ambiguous, Young Diverse & Proud Youth Development Programs (YDP), and Pow Wow dancing showcases. The event will also be combined with Indian Tacos by Ginger’s Bannock House, a small round dance, crafts and story-telling spearheaded by community members to showcase indigenous culture in Edmonton. Action for Healthy Communities (ACH) is a registered charity serving the needs of youth, seniors, and adults in Greater Edmonton. Our Mission is to build stronger and healthier communities by fostering citizen participation and action to improve the health of the community. It is hoped that bridges and relationships can be built through the sharing of cultures. This event is open to the public free of charge. Please join us to celebrate unique Native heritage, enjoy the beauty of diverse indigenous cultures, and aide in building positive connections with indigenous communities. |

You Rocked!
On October 4th, 2012 one of the Westlawn Village apartment buildings was set on fire, leaving 100 tenants homeless, and causing 1.8 million dollars of damage. Throughout the night 60 firemen and 18 fire units fought the intentionally started fire. To date no charges have been laid and families have had to relocate. The Edmonton Emergency Relief Society and Red Cross have been hard
at work helping these families rebuild their basic needs, yet there has been a
noticeable gap in resources for housing.
On January 26th, 2013 The Edmonton Emergency Relief Society, Red
Cross, the fire response teams, the media, and other housing representatives
are invited to build marshmallow apartments, and discuss emergency housing
issues. Key individuals will be invited to attend Chicago Joe’s 9604-111ave at 2:00 PM.
Emergency hotel resources up to 72 hours are available to those are left homeless, and services such as the Edmonton Emergency Relief Society are available to help rebuild basic needs such as clothing and furniture. However, The Edmonton Emergency Relief Society has identified a need for longer term support and housing for those faced with emergency situations. Out of approximately 25 housing services in Edmonton, none are specific to emergency situations, and families are directed to contact other social supports to help them find hotels, or rely on the goodwill of family and friends.
An assortment of dishes offered by Chicago Joe’s will be provided, while marshmallow buildings and discussion occur. As
well, all attendees and the public are welcomed to attend an evening concert benefit at the venue featuring Edmonton talent; RC Sindicate, Monarch Sky, and theater singer Kirsten Kirsch.
Lead singer Mr.Knowbodyfrom RC Sindicate requested his band do something to help his neighbours after he
spent days worrying about the state of his home. Mr. Knowbody is a tenant of Westlawn Village, whom still vividly remembers watching as his apartment building up in flames. He spent a number of days staying with friends before he was able to return to is fire damaged home. Unlike Mr. Knowbody, many of his neighbours were not able to return home due to the extreme damage. He would like to help some of his neighbours the best way he knows how, by performing his music and raising what awareness and financial support he can for the services that responded to the tragic fire.

Y.E.S.S We Can Help
In January of 2012 it was announced that Y.E.S.S had not reached
their fundraising goal by around $400, 000.00, and may have to cut funding to
youth programming. In response to this, members of the local music industry, and past Y.E.S.S recipients have come together to produce what will be a deeply meaningful benefit concert for the youth, and concerned public. It is the objective of this concert to raise donations, and to perform for the staff and youth of Y.E.S.S; raising moral, and hope for a better future. It is in this spirit that Aboriginal Music Award winner Will Belcourt, RC Sindicate, Greg Wood, Paula Perro, and others will perform on March 24th, 2012, 11:00am to 5:00pm @ City Centre Church.
Y.E.S.S estimates that they work with “ roughly 3000 teens” per year, of which 75 % of the youth have experienced serious abuse and/or neglect. Life Skills
programming, bedding, and the basic needs all require money to be able to
provide these to the youth. Organizers have been working tirelessly to pull
together an uplifting concert in order to minimize the effects of the funding shortage, however the support of the community is needed
for the long run.
To donate to the Y.E.S.S please go to: www.yess.org
The March 24th event will also have a special appearance by Rocker
Carson Cole, and tickets are currently on sale, with children under 12 free.

Keep Walking the Good Road
“Rock for the Walk” is a fundraising concert to support the “Walk for Nations” initiative spearheaded by 7 Generations Healing Network. The “Walk for Nations” group intends to walk 7000 km across Canada to promote First Nations traditional lifestyles targeted towards high-risk youth. The purpose of the walk is to create awareness on the ever increasing negative impacts caused by gang culture and street violence. This is one path that they hope to prevent young people from choosing. With the help of their ancestors, 7 Generations have devoted their time and lives to this 8-month journey in hopes that they can make a difference in our young people’s lives. Donations will be used to help support travel costs and purchase winter clothing for the walkers to complete their goals and reach their final destination in Campbell River, B.C end of December 2011. The group has already walked through cities such as Toronto, and Winnipeg to deliver their message, with receptive welcomes. They will arrive in Edmonton on October 28th, 2011, at the City Center CBC stage at noon, where they will be welcomed by drummers, concert performers, and other social agencies working towards creating positive outlets for youth.
